How to Train for the Mount Shasta Summit Century (or other century)

First time century riders -- or those who have never ridden a ride as challenging as the Summit Century or Super Century -- should realize getting some focus and direction might be just the thing to create an enjoyable experience with fewer surprises.

1. Set your own personal mileage goals. This century has several options so you should decide what your target is and start preparing to accomplish that goal.

2. Ride to simulate the conditions. Many of the options on the Summit Century are very hilly and challenging. You can do yourself a huge favor by riding hills as frequently as possible. Show up with only a few hills in your legs, and you will almost certainly struggle.

3. Gradually increase your training mileage. You will need to slowly increase your training miles in order to get your body used to the distance you are planning on covering. Trying to do too much too soon can often result in fatigue, injury, and even a loss of form.

4. Food and Hydration are very important factors in any century. While the Shasta Summit Century has many aid stations, it is still critical that you be prepared at all times to go at least two hours without aid. Carry what you need to get you to the finish!
